Facial recognition is risky. This video attempts to show a future, one that might be nearer than we imagine, where a system in place observes an individual and imposes forces due to what it interprets. (More Below)


The invasion of privacy necessary to make this software work is, on its own, problematic, and still yet there is more risk to deliberate in its mobilization. This technology, when it works, still threatens individual self-mastery, sense of autonomy, privacy, and so much more. But a system is only as perfect as its creator. In the news recently, we must have noticed a problematic rise in crimes, and hate, against people of color, during the pandemic. It should also be noted that Facial recognition technology has a history of misidentifying people of color, women, non-binary folk, and children; a problem stemming from bias training data collection. So why does it seem necessary to implement an imperfect system, into an already imperfect governing authority? There are also extra layers of “assumptions” that can be interpreted in this video, such as the fact that I am a person of color, wearing a mask which obscures my identity in public.
